Welcome to the Help section of Medical Practice Coding Pro Decisions! The following points should help you navigate Medical Practice Coding Pro Decisions to find the content you need more easily. If you are unable to find the answer you need, please send a note to the Medical Practice Coding Pro Editors.

Pick your specialty

When you first log into the site, click on the drop-down menu titled “Multi-specialty” and choose your specialty. You can leave the setting on multi-specialty or choose the specific specialty you’re interested in. Once you choose a specialty the website’s Home page will be updated to include articles, guidance and information specific to your specialty. However, you will have access to all Coding Pro articles through the Article Search field and the Coding Pro Archive page. Feel free to change between specialties whenever you like.

Read or print out a whole issue of Medical Practice Coding Pro

Click on one of the featured article links on the codingpro-decisions.com Home page, or click on Get Latest Issue to view all the stories and print out a PDF of the full issue. You can also view the current Coding Pro issue, the Coding Pro archive and the featured departments – Ask the Expert, Specialty Roundup, Transition to ICD-10, Mind Your Modifiers and Understanding E/M – by clicking on Articles and Guidance link at the top of the Home page.

‘Bookmark’ an article or code for later reference

Mark specific articles or codes to save time having to search for them later by clicking on the star below the article or in the right column on the code detail page. The star will turn gold and the article will be placed on your Bookmarks page for later reference.

View or search past Coding Pro articles

Access the archive of back issues by placing your cursor on Articles and Guidelines at the top of the Home page and selecting Coding Pro Archives from the drop-down menu. You may also search all Coding Pro articles by typing a word or phrase into the Article Search field on both the Home page and the Coding Pro Archive page.

Code Search

Quickly look up information about a CPT®, HCPCS or ICD-9 code using the search tool on the Coding Pro Decisions Home page or select “Code Search” from the blue bar at the top of the page (You can also browse to an individual code with the “Browse Codes” link).

Type in a code or part of a code description and hit “Enter” to pull up the code information page, where you’ll find:

  • RBRVS relative value units
  • Medicare fees specific to your locality
  • Links to relevant articles from the Medical Practice Coding Pro newsletter
  • Payment status and billing indicators (e.g., whether the code may be billed bilaterally or a co-surgeon may be billed)
  • Coding guidelines (e.g. CPT® or ICD-9)
  • Lay description of procedure codes, many with illustrations
  • Links to relevant Medicare policies, including the Claims Processing Manual, national coverage determinations (if available) and local coverage decisions

Attach a note to a code entry to keep track of your internal policies

Transfer your code book margin notes, or attach reminders about specific payer policies by adding your own personal notes to individual codes.

Locate a code, then click on the “Add User Note” link in the upper right column to add a code note that only you will see. If your practice has a site license, you can use “Add Group Note” to save an internal coding policy note that everyone in your practice who used the site will have access to.

Create a code information sheet to share with payers, doctors or staff

You can print out a comprehensive code info sheet that includes the RBRVS RVUs, local fees, payment status, billing indicators and lay description to print out and fax to payers or share with staff.

To do this, access the code using the Code Search function, and click “Print Code” in the upper right and print the sheet.
